Be doubly careful when working for 2 bosses

Stockbyte/Thinkstock

Working for two bosses requires an employee to balance the demands of both with intelligence and sensitivity.

By Jacquelyn Smith, Forbes

?My colleague is an anomaly among the writers at Forbes. She splits her time reporting to two different editors. She jokes that Editor A owns her right side and Editor B her left, and some days she feels like she is being stretched both ways. But she says it all works out, because they all communicate well and share the same goals. Editor A thinks that has a lot to do with the culture of the Forbes workplace. ?We work in an environment where people always pitch in and want to help out,? he told her. ?We know that everyone is working their hardest, and people just don?t act resentful or put-upon here. That makes trust and cooperation much easier.?

Forbes.com: In Pictures: How to work for more than one boss

As companies dismantle their old internal walls ? as marketing talks more to finance, for instance ? more and more people find themselves reporting to multiple bosses. Ideally, everyone involved has the same basic mission, neither boss is trying to outrank the other, and the person being bossed knows exactly what his or her tasks are and how the individual is being measured. In tougher cases, bosses may have conflicting agendas or views of the company?s direction.

?Communication is the most important part of it,? said Anita Attridge, a career and executive coach with the Five O?Clock Club, a career coaching organization. ?If your bosses don?t work well together, you have to negotiate with them to arrive at a win-win situation.? In that situation, said Attridge, explain to them both that Boss A wants one thing and Boss B another, and offer a solution that can meet both of their needs.

Forbes.com: 10 questions you'd better ask your boss

?The best way to please any manager or any two or three managers is to communicate clearly, leaving very little to chance.?For example, be clear about deadlines and deliverables,? said Connie Thanasoulis-Cerrachio, a career expert and co-founder of SixFigureStart, a career coaching firm. ?The people who have the most trouble with these types of situations are those that don?t communicate well, take things personally, gossip and/or get overly emotional. You need thick skin and a confident demeanor to survive and thrive?in business. Remember, you are there to do a job, so focus on the results.

The younger and more junior you are, the harder it may be to push back. It?s the age-old dilemma of the person on the bottom rung: seemingly endless requests from seemingly countless people. ?You don?t have to be an order taker,? Thanasoulis-Cerrachio said. ?Give them feedback so they know what is involved and what you?ll be doing.?

Forbes.com: How to win over your boss

At the other end of the spectrum, more seasoned employees should have more skills under their belt that can help in potentially difficult situations, like juggling multiple bosses, Thanasoulis-Cerrachio said. If you are more experienced, learn how each boss likes to communicate and, more importantly, know what their goals are.? ?Help each achieve their goals and you will always be employed,? she added.

Workers with two or more bosses often juggle multiple assignments that each boss considers urgent. It can be difficult to manage the heavy workload and the bosses? conflicting demands. Attridge says that in such a situation you should negotiate your deadlines. ?If you have multiple 8 a.m. deadlines, consider asking each boss if he or she could accept the work later in the day,? she said. ?The answer might be no, but at least you?ll have tried. You?ll very quickly learn which bosses are willing to work with you, and who is more resistant.? Attridge advised to always give bosses an alternative, rather than a flat-out ?I can?t do this.?

Forbes.com: When the boss hits on you

Learn your bosses? styles, and keep them at ease by making sure they know what you?re doing and for whom. My colleague says Editor B wants her to check in every 48 hours with an update on what she?s doing and any problems she might be having. Editor A is more hands-off, just wanting the work they agree on done on deadline. Neither knows what she is doing for the other unless she tells him. Most of the time she does so casually, by dropping by their offices with an update, but when she is feeling particularly busy and unsure how to prioritize, she?ll email them both with a list of her tasks and ask them for their advice.

Forbes.com: America's favorite bosses

My colleague says her type-A organizing works to their collective advantage. ?An electronic calendar is a must, and so is keeping it updated,? said Thanasoulis-Cerrachio. ?Ask what is important to your bosses regarding scheduling so there are no misunderstandings. It also shows you are a mature professional that manages your time and your relationships with ease.?

Serving multiple masters can have definite advantages, too. It can get you more allies and exposure within the organization, and you can benefit from experiencing the management styles and knowledge of two different people.

Forbes.com: How to deal with a younger boss

?Successful employees think strategically about their careers and where they want their careers to go,? said Thanasoulis-Cerrachio. ?If marketing is your focus, and one manager clearly has more of a marketing role, you may want to gravitate towards that person.?But don?t forget about your other boss.?Make them feel like you care as well. Remember that you can learn so much from anyone, so don?t let two managers throw you. Make sure you profit from every experience.?

The Green Olympics: How Does Sustainability Come Into Play ...

by ethicalDeal Marketing Coordinator Meaghan (Meg) Orlinkski

Meaghan Orlinski's olympic souvenirs

In 2003 Vancouver was awarded the bid for the 2010 Olympic games. This happened to be the first year I lived in Whistler. I remember the pros and cons of the Olympic debate was a daily subject in the village. One of the shinning pros of the bid was that organizers promised these Olympics would be the green Olympics. The Olympic Bid Committee talked of the integration of healthy and sustainable practices into all accounts of the game to be considerate of the sensitive environmental nature of the Sea to Sky Valley.

This would be my introduction to sustainable design. I was in love.

?

I moved back to Ontario and was accepted into Ryerson?s prestigious School of Fashion. My communications program had an events management professional stream, and I spent the next four years educating myself as to what a sustainable event was, and the best practices to effectuate sustainable behaviour change using graphic design and marketing. The goal I was working towards was simply to work for the Olympics to make it more sustainable.

In fall of 2009, freshly minted from the program, I moved to beautiful Pemberton, BC to persue my Olympic dreams.? Eventually I found myself with a job in transportation with the Olympic fleet vehicles. Essentially, I was helping put hundreds of SUV?s out into the road. Not exactly what I pictured my dream job to be.

Vancouver 2012 Olympic vehicle

However, since the universe seems to be literal, this was exactly what I had asked for. Creating sustainable change does not have to come from a top organizational or management positions. Creating change comes from all levels of an organization. I had the best position of working directly with my incredible, amazing and inspiring team of volunteer drivers.

I had allies in my fleet when it came to anti-idling policies, a few environmentally conscious drivers and team members where very supportive. However, management did not see an anti-idling policy as a priority. Many of my drivers were older and set in their old Canadian ways that in the winter a car had to warm up for 15 minutes. What to do?

Putting on my marketing hat, I realized that if someone had environmental values, they would already not be idling. Therefore, how to connect to my hundreds of other volunteers who were not greenies?? I came up with two lines of education around anti-idling policies.

The first was an information sheet around our athletes and future athletes. I wanted my volunteers to know that idling our Olympic vehicles could cause damage ? not just to ?the environment?, but to our present and future athletes? lungs. They were the reasons we had left our normal lives behind to be in Whistler.? In a one page information sheet with eight points I simply stated easy to understand information, such as athletes can take in up to six times more air, which means six times more pollution. This causes reduced performance and has been linked to asthmas. ? Another was that children are particularly susceptible to emissions from tail pipes in parking lots due to their height and lung size.

The second stream was respecting our Olympic sponsors. Conserving gas would help our petrol sponsor put more funds towards the actual athletes. We had brand new vehicles, and because of new technology warming up the engine was now obsolete. In fact, idling a vehicle for more than three to five minutes would cause damage to the engine. This is not a way you thank a sponsor.

I put up my information sheets all around our transportation compound. There was much discussion, and even some rather strangely violent opposition to the messages. I had no metrics to measure the impact of this campaign, but qualitatively I know I helped create conversations, change a few minds and help preserve the beautiful mountain air of Whistler.

?

Green Olympics in London?

Currently there has been much discussion around the 2012 summer games about the infamous London smog and how it could affect athletes. I am happy this issue is being discussed and studied. Local air pollution is not an environmental issue or special interest. It?s a human issue ? a health issue. In the spirit of the Olympics, I am happy to see the world come together to work on solving this issue for the sake of our future Olympics.

Over the next few weeks, I will discuss further few sustainable issues that surround the games, and provide tips on how you can make athletics more sustainable yourself.

Please enjoy and share Artist Faisal Abdu?Allah?s film Double Pendulum, brought to you by the BBC Olympic 2012 focus.

NASA X-Ray Mirror Idea Inspired by Scotch Tape (No, Really!)

Scotch tape, that transparent, sticky hero of offices everywhere, could be a NASA superstar as well.

The rolled-up adhesive tape is the inspiration behind a novel idea for a completely new kind of X-ray mirror for big telescopes in space. The concept, dreamed up by NASA scientist Maxim Markevitch, is this: Instead of building an expensive telescope mirror to capture high-energy "hard" X-rays in space, why not create a mirror from tightly rolled plastic tape at a much lower cost?

"I remember looking at a roll of Scotch tape and thinking, 'Was it possible to use the same design for capturing hard X-rays?'" Markevitch explained in a NASA statement. "I talked with a few people, and to my surprise, they didn't see any principal reasons why it couldn't be done."

Markevitch and a team of other X-ray space optics experts at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., have begun testing materials that could be used to build a rolled mirror sensitive enough to collect hard X-rays from deep space. [Giant Space Telescopes of the Future (Infographic)]

Capturing 'hard' X-rays

Several space telescopes already scan the heavens for X-rays today, including NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and black hole-hunting NuSTAR instrument, as well as Japan's New X-ray Telescope (which is also known as Astro-H).

But Chandra is sensitive to lower-energy "soft" X-rays, and NuSTAR and Astro-H have limited collecting areas that allow them to only "graze the surface" of possible discoveries in the hard X-ray realm, Markevitch said.

To really do the job, scientists need an imaging X-ray telescope with a collecting area perhaps 30 times larger than that of NuSTAR, he added. If such a telescope could be built, it could study galactic cosmic rays, super-fast subatomic particles generated in deep space.

Scientists believe cosmic rays and the magnetic fields between galaxy clusters can alter the physics within clusters. A better understanding of these physics could reveal more about the birth and evolution of the universe, Markevitch said.

But a telescope capable of making such finds using current technology ? which would require building a large number of individual mirror segments, coating them with reflective material and them nesting them precisely inside an optical assembly ? doesn't appear to be coming along anytime soon.

"However, to our knowledge, nothing of the kind is planned or even proposed in the U.S. or elsewhere because of the cost something like this presents," Markevitch said.

Just a concept ? for now

Markevitch and his team hope a new way of thinking could help push such a project along.

Their idea calls for coating plastic tape on one side with multiple layers of reflective material, then winding the tape into a roll to form a large number of densely packed nested shells. This process could theoretically create a mirror with a huge collecting area, Markevitch said.

While the team is currently testing candidate materials, the idea is still a long way from getting off the ground.

"Maxim's Scotch tape idea is in an early stage," said team member Will Zhang, also of NASA Goddard. "In the next year, we will know whether it has a chance of working."

If the tape does indeed work, it could be "game-changing for hard X-ray astronomy," Markevitch said. "It could significantly reduce the cost of building large mirrors, bringing within reach the possibility of building a mirror with 10 to 30 times greater effective area than current X-ray telescopes."

Web Design and Video Marketing

Web design is not only one of the rewarding online business opportunities but a viable technique in online marketing.

As an online business proprietor, it is imperative for you to own a top-rating website. Your site is one of the very first things that consumers and potential buyers will look for. The website design serves as the window to your business.

Business owners will opt for experienced designers who can concentrate on their requirements.
Nowadays, customers look for commodities and services on the internet before buying so it is really essential to have a website design that will give you an advantage over your competitors. You do not have to allocate a big budget for advertising and promotions because customers can easily find the website in search engines. The contents that are found in the site itself will answer their queries regarding product features and benefits. Clients can easily teach themselves on salient points about your business. Meanwhile, your website can also provide information that is relevant to consumers such as practical tips, buying guides, household procedures, job opportunities and valuable products.

Developing and designing websites are important elements in search engine optimization. SEO cannot be implemented effectively without these two components. In fact, online entrepreneurs can look forward to more lucrative opportunities by enlisting the services of professional web developers and designers.

Pointers on Video Marketing
So much has been written and published about video marketing as one of the rewarding online business opportunities. These online articles try to tell readers how to make the best videos and things needed to produce excellent footages. The problem of greenhorns is that too much stuff may cause confusion. Thus, the basic thing to remember is that videos need to drive traffic and generate enough sales.

Your concern is to present the information to target audiences in the most systematic manner. In the internet marketing industry, the challenge is to educate viewers regarding how to do something online. The strategy is to use software that allows you to make recordings on your computer screen and combine these footages with a prepared script for a video material. If something needs to be done offline, a video camera and tripod will be required.

In video marketing production, it is necessary to organize and do an outline. Keep the video as short as possible and try to emphasize your point and make it clear to the audience. It should be a summary of the product or services that you are trying to sell as a business person. It is like giving something that is of value to prospective customers so that they will ultimately purchase from you. Make sure to choose keywords that are pertinent to your niche market. The key is to have three to five keywords that obtain high and regular searches and minimal competition. The final step is to submit your video to directories like You Tube for publicity purposes.Your concern is to present the information to target audiences in the most systematic manner. Weight Control Can Cut Women's Diabetes Risk, Study Shows

FRIDAY, July 27 (HealthDay News) -- Weight control through diet and exercise can prevent most cases of type 2 diabetes in American women over age 50, a new study finds.

Researchers from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Mass., analyzed data from more than 150,000 postmenopausal women who were followed for more than 10 years. Hispanics and Asians were about twice as likely as whites to develop diabetes; blacks were two to three times as likely.

Those differences were largely due to modifiable lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity and smoking, the researchers said.

The study also found that a large reduction in diabetes risk among women would occur in all four racial and ethnic groups if they maintained a healthy body weight, ate a healthy diet and were physically active.

Maintaining a body-mass index (BMI) of less than 25 appeared to be particularly important in reducing diabetes risk. BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight.

"Our work shows that among numerous races [and] ethnicities, the women with both high body-mass index and low levels of physical activity are far more likely to develop diabetes," primary investigator Dr. Yunsheng Ma said in a medical school news release. "A healthier diet and adequate levels of physical activity significantly lower that risk for most women."

The study was published July 23 in the journal Diabetes Care.

Type 2 diabetes, the more common type, means the body doesn't produce or properly use the hormone insulin, which is needed to convert food into energy. Untreated, type 2 diabetes can cause damage to the heart, eyes, kidneys and other organs.

Gallup: Obama hit new low with business owners in the second ...

posted at 8:41 am on July 26, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Gallup?s latest synthesis of its quarterly polling provides Barack Obama with a mixed bag.? Earlier, Gallup had reported a slight increase in Obama?s approval ratings, but still below the re-elect threshold, and some subgroups reflect that upward trend.? For instance, Obama?s approval rating among install/repair workers jumped 13 points ? but it?s still only 44%.? Clerical/office worker approval jumped 8 points to 51%.? Most of the rest of the changes fell within the margin of error, except one:

?U.S. business owners? approval of President Barack Obama fell in the second quarter of 2012 to 35%, essentially tying farmers and fishers for the lowest approval among major occupational groups. Overall, professional workers remain the most approving, at 52%. ?

Obama?s job approval ratings by occupational group clearly relate to election preferences.?Gallup previously found?that Obama does best compared with likely Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney among voters who are professionals and service workers. Romney does best among voters who work in farming and fishing or construction, or are business owners.

In the overall average for the second quarter of 2012, 47% of working Americans approved of the job Obama is doing as president, and 47% disapproved. This is slightly improved from 45% approval and 48% disapproval in the first quarter.

Obama?s best category was ?professional worker,? which remained unchanged at 52/43, hardly a ringing endorsement.? Two others ? clerical/office and service workers ? topped 50%.? The other eight categories have disapproval ratings above 50%, including five that tie or exceed the approval rating of professional workers:

  • Manager/executive (52% disapproval)
  • Transportation worker (55%)
  • Construction or mining (53%)
  • Farming/fishing/forestry (57%)
  • Business owner (59%)

Business owners obviously weren?t terribly enamored of Obama even before the ?you didn?t build that? comment.? That prompts a question as to whether the anger it stokes among entrepreneurs will really do that much damage to Obama.? He might lose a big chunk of the 35% of business owners that approved of him in the second quarter, but the class-warfare tactic could help to improve his standing in other categories.

The Romney campaign won?t let that ambiguity stop them from pressing the advantage.? They have now broken out the ?you didn?t build that? campaign into state-targeted efforts.? This morning, Team Romney released this web ad for Nevada, an important battleground state in the interior West:

Presumably, these ads will hit the air when Romney can spend his general election funds, in about six weeks.

Presidential debate: Teenage girls campaign for woman moderator in 2012

Three female high school students have launched an online petition drive to convince the Commission on Presidential Debates to name a female moderator for one of this year's televised presidential debates.

By Kimberly Railey,?Contributor / July 27, 2012

For 20 years, presidential debates have muted the voice of the majority of American voters: women.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Since 1992, no female journalist has served as the moderator of a presidential debate. But this fall, change might be coming ? thanks to three high school students.

Three classmates at Montclair High School in Montclair, N.J -- Emma Axelrod, Elena Tsemberis, and Sammi Siegel ? are mounting an online campaign that calls for a female moderator in this year?s?presidential?debates between President Obama and presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney. The petition, posted on Change.org, has garnered more than 116,000 signatures.

It has even caught the attention of the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD), the organization tasked with selecting the debate moderators.

?If women make up 50 percent of the population, why in the last 20 years have they made up 0 percent of this very powerful role?? said Ms. Axelrod in an interview. ?It?s really inexplicable.?

The last woman to moderate a presidential debate was ABC News? Carole Simpson in 1992, when Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Ross Perot squared off. PBS? Gwen Ifill moderated the vice-presidential debate in 2004, between Dick Cheney and John Edwards, and in 2008, between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin. All other presidential debates have featured male moderators.

Inspired by a civics class, the petition frames its objective as an issue of equality. The students launched a subsequent petition this week urging the Obama and Romney campaigns to support their initiative. ??

Ultimately, the CPD ? whose 17 members include just two women ? retains full authority over its decision and has enjoyed the backing of Democrats and Republicans for years. In its quest for moderators, the commission seeks veteran television broadcasters who ?understand their job is to facilitate the conversation and focus their time on the candidates,? says Janet Brown, its executive director.

Ms. Brown pushed back hard against allegations that women have been excluded as moderators, noting that nine women and 12 men have sat on panels and moderated vice-presidential debates since 1988. Still, she says the commission ?welcomes input from everyone.?

Eccentric Games opening starts with countdown, bell

LONDON (Reuters) - The eagerly awaited opening ceremony to the 2012 Olympic Games kicked off on Friday with a mass countdown and the chime of a giant bell, ushering in an eccentric and exuberant celebration of British history, art and culture.

Some 60,000 spectators crowded into the state-of-the-art arena at the Olympic Park, built in a previously run-down area of the city's East End, and over a billion more people tuned in around the world for the three-hour extravaganza.

The centre of the stadium was transformed into an English pastoral idyll complete with grassy meadows, fences, hedges, a water mill, maypoles and even a cottage with smoking chimney.

A cast including shepherdesses, sheep, geese, dogs and a village cricket team filled the stage during the one-hour prologue to the show that included a dramatic, low-level fly-past by the jets of the Royal Air Force's Red Arrows stunt team.

At one end of the stadium stands a grassy knoll topped by a tree and at the other end the bell. In front of each is a "mosh pit" of people conjuring the spirit of the Glastonbury music festival and Last Night of the Proms classical concert.

London Mayor Boris Johnson sought to sum up the mood of excitement sweeping the capital.

"The excitement is growing so much I think the Geiger counter of Olympo-mania is going to go zoink off the scale," he told crowds at Hyde Park in the city centre.

Among the crowd were celebrities, ordinary Londoners, visitors from abroad and dignitaries including U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama as well as presidents, prime ministers and European royalty.

At the end of the event, which also includes speeches, the athletes' parade and the lighting of the Olympic cauldron, Queen Elizabeth, celebrating her Diamond Jubilee this year, declares the 2012 Games open.

Over the following 17 days, the drama of sporting contest takes hold as more than 16,000 athletes from 204 countries will aim to achieve their ultimate dream - Olympic gold.

Oscar-winning "Slumdog Millionaire" director Danny Boyle has masterminded the show, costing 27 million pounds ($42 million) to stage, less than half the estimated spending on the Beijing equivalent in 2008 and dramatically different in style.

The ceremony opened with a countdown followed by a chime of an especially cast, 23-tonne Olympic bell which was rung by Britain's Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins.

"ISLE OF WONDER"

Boyle's colorful and sometimes chaotic vision aims to create a kaleidoscope of what it means to be British, an approach that could appeal to the home audience but leave many foreign viewers scratching their heads at times.

Entitled "Isles of Wonder" and inspired by Shakespeare's "The Tempest", the show takes viewers on a journey from what poet William Blake famously called "England's green and pleasant land" to the "dark Satanic mills" of the Industrial Revolution.

Divided into three main sections, it will also celebrate the National Health Service, cherished by Britons despite being a political hot potato at a time when austerity measures have forced major spending cuts.

It includes a moment's silence to those who fell in conflict, spectacular light effects generated by colored "pixel" light boxes beside each seat and giant puppets of some of the most famous characters from children's literature.

Spectators will be urged to join in traditional sing-a-longs, beloved by East End pub-drinkers, and help to create spectacular visual effects at an event that sets the tone for the sporting spectacle.

Boyle has conceded that audiences overseas may be confused.

"In the second half of it you'll see what we call the industrial parade which is actually slightly surreal, some of you will be baffled, I can guarantee it," he told reporters.

He also paid tribute to the 10,000 volunteers, cast and crew taking part in the ceremony.

"We hope the feeling of the show is a celebration of generosity," he said. "There's no better expression of that than these volunteers."

Chinese reporters at the stadium asked British colleagues what the various stages meant, saying they were struggling to understand the concepts. "It's really difficult to explain this to Chinese readers," one said.

Boyle has been at pains to encourage volunteers taking part in the show and tens of thousands more who attended rehearsals this week to keep its content a surprise.

That has not prevented details being leaked through Twitter, Facebook and the mainstream media.

Ex-Beatle Paul McCartney will be among the many performers on the night, but the biggest secret of all - who has the honor of lighting the Olympic cauldron at the end of the show - remains a mystery.

Sprint CEO outs the Motorola Photon Q during earnings call

Sprint Motorola Photon 4G

Sprint has yet to officially announce the Motorola Photon Q, which we first showed you from a leak in our forums earlier this summer, and which has already made it through the FCC. Sprint CEO Dan Hesse this morning during the company's second-quarter earnings call said the phone is coming "very soon." It'll sport 4G LTE data and also serve as a GSM world phone outside the United States, in addition to having the five-row QWERTY keyboard you see above.

Unknown is whether it'll launch with Ice Cream Sandwich, as seen in the test device above, or whether it'll get a bump to Jelly Bean before release. We'd bet on the former, with an upgrade to the latter.

We'd expect an official announcement is in the works now, too.

Rambus planning appeal after losing ITC patent case against LSI and STMicroelectronics

Rambus has lost the ITC dispute it filed with most of the electronics industry back in the day. Only LSI and STMicroelectronics remained as respondents after the company negotiated settlements with Freescale, Broadcom, MediaTek and NVIDIA. In its decision, the court found that some of the patents were unenforceable, while others ceased to be under the "clean hands" doctrine because Rambus had allegedly destroyed relevant documents. Company general counsel, Thomas Lavelle, has said in a statement that its next move might be to make an appeal to the Federal Circuit -- where it's hoping for better luck.

Blogging the Human Genome

At least with Lincoln, geneticists have an idea of what to look for. Not so with Charles Darwin?he remains a medical enigma. After returning from the Beagle voyage and marrying, Darwin deteriorated into a wheezing wreck. He suffered from boils, fainting fits, heart flutters, numb fingers, insomnia, migraines, dizziness, eczema, and ?fiery spokes and dark clouds? before his eyes. The strangest symptom was a ringing in the ears, after which he?d always pass horrendous gas. But above all Darwin barfed. He barfed after breakfast, after lunch, after dinner, brunch, tea, whenever?and kept going until he was dry-heaving. In peak form he vomited 20 times an hour, and once vomited 27 days running. Mental exertion invariably made his stomach worse, and even Darwin, the most intellectually fecund biologist ever, could make no sense of this. ?What thought has to do with digesting roast beef,? he once sighed, ?I cannot say.?

Conn. governor commutes lobster's lunch sentence

STONINGTON, Conn. (AP) ? A 15-pound lobster facing a sentence of lunch has received a pardon from Connecticut's governor.

The Day of New London reports (http://bit.ly/M9EUM2 ) Gov. Dannel P. Malloy was visiting tourist attractions in southeastern Connecticut when he issued the impromptu pardon at Abbott's Lobster in the Rough restaurant in Noank.

The governor then released the crustacean into the Mystic River.

The move came a day after a Niantic man bought a 17-pound lobster at a Waterford restaurant and released it back into Long Island Sound.

Randy Fiveash, the state's tourism director, compared the governor's action to the president's annual pardon of a turkey on Thanksgiving.

Malloy has been visiting tourist spots across the state after launching a two-year, $27 million campaign earlier this year to promote the industry.

FTSE steadies, digesting mixed earnings

LONDON (Reuters) - The FTSE 100 steadied on Wednesday, pausing after three days of falls thanks to a mixed batch of corporate results that pitted a weak showing in Europe for GlaxoSmithKline and BT against a sterling performance for chipmaker Arm.

The international backdrop also offered conflicting signals, with weak U.S. data on the one hand and growing hopes of fresh steps to combat the euro zone crisis on the other.

At the close, the FTSE 100 index <.ftse> was broadly flat at 5,498.32 points, taking a breather after a three-session losing streak. Volume was once again weak, at two-thirds of its 90-day daily average.

"With seven FTSE 100 companies reporting today, and 13 due to update the market on Thursday, we'll have had a fifth of the UK blue chips reporting in just two sessions. It'll take analysts and strategists a while to chew through all the details, but so far the earnings season is looking more mixed than positive in the UK," said Mike Mason, a trader with Sucden Financial Private Clients.

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) , down 1.3 percent, was the biggest drag on the index, as the group warned that sales in 2012 will be flat and posted below-forecast second-quarter results due to weakness in the European markets.

"Overall, a slightly disappointing quarter for GSK with a slight miss both on revenues and EPS, but this is not very unexpected - GSK had clearly been signalling a weaker Q2 was likely. The longer-term growth with GSK continues to look comparatively good," Bernstein Research said in a note.

The pharmaceuticals heavyweight shaved around 4 points off the FTSE 100 index.

A lacklustre showing in crisis-hit Europe also hurt performance at British telecom group BT , down 3.3 percent as its quarterly results came in below analysts' forecasts. Espirito Santo Investment Bank analysts described the results as "a little soft".

Results were not always the top focus, though. Tullow Oil shed 6.3 percent in heavy volumes, as investors focused on risks and costs associated with its proposed Uganda development, shrugging off an in-line rise in first half profits.

On the upside, ARM Holdings , up 8.6 percent, was the top gainer trading in high volume of almost twice its 90-day daily average, with the chip designer's results beating market expectations as demand for its low power chips in smartphones and tablets outstripped the industry.

Banks <.ftnmx8350>, up 1.2 percent, were the biggest positive weight on the index, after European Central Bank policymaker Ewald Nowotny raised the prospect of steps that could boost the firepower of the euro zone's new bailout fund earlier on Wednesday spurring a Europe-wide share rebound, particularly in the heavily sold indexes of Spain and Italy.

HSBC , which reports earnings next Monday, was up 1.4 percent leading the sector and providing it with the biggest individual support.

Energy stocks were also among the best performers, led by oil major Shell , up 0.8 percent, which sealed an exploration tie-up with China's state-run oil firm CNOOC on Wednesday in a move which will help secure longer term growth from projects in the world's energy-hungry second largest economy.

Satellites reveal sudden ice melt

The surface of Greenland's massive ice sheet has melted this month over an unusually large area, Nasa has said.

Scientists said the "unprecedented" melting took place over a larger area than has been detected in three decades of satellite observation.

Melting even occurred at Greenland's coldest and highest place, Summit station.

The thawed ice area jumped from 40% of the ice sheet to 97% in just four days from 8 July.

Melting events of this type occur about once every 150 years on average. With the last one happening in 1889, this event is right on time?

End Quote Lora Koenig Nasa Goddard Space Flight Center

Although about half of Greenland's ice sheet normally sees surface melting over the summer months, the speed and scale of this year's thaw surprised scientists, who described the phenomenon as "extraordinary".

Nasa said that nearly the entire ice cover of Greenland, from its thin, low-lying coastal edges to its centre, which is 3km (two miles) thick, experienced some degree of melting at its surface.

Until now, the most extensive melting seen by satellites in the past three decades was about 55% of the area.

According to ice core records, such pronounced melting at Summit station and across the ice sheet has not occurred since 1889.

"When we see melt in places that we haven't seen before, at least in a long period of time, it makes you sit up and ask what's happening," Nasa chief scientist Waleed Abdalati said.

"It's a big signal, the meaning of which we're going to sort out for years to come."

Watch this space

He said that, because this Greenland-wide melting has happened before - in 1889 - scientists are not yet able to determine whether this is a natural but rare event, or if it has been sparked by man-made climate change.

The observation is in my view much more important than the recently reported break up of a large iceberg from Petermann Glacier?

End Quote Poul Christoffersen Scott Polar Research Institute

"Ice cores from Summit show that melting events of this type occur about once every 150 years on average. With the last one happening in 1889, this event is right on time," said Lora Koenig, a glaciologist from Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland and a member of the research team analysing the satellite data.

"But if we continue to observe melting events like this in upcoming years, it will be worrisome."

Prof Eric Wolff, from the British Antarctic Survey (Bas) told BBC News: "There have clearly been some very warm days in Greenland this month. As a result, the surface snow has melted across the whole ice sheet.

"This is confirmed by some of my international colleagues who are on the ground at the NEEM ice core drilling site in north Greenland - they are reporting several days with temperatures above zero, and ice layers forming in the snow.

"While this is very unusual, as always we cannot attribute any individual extreme event to climate change: We will have to wait and see if more such events occur in the next few years to understand its significance for both the climate and the health of the ice sheet."

Dr Poul Christoffersen, a glaciologist and engineer at the Scott Polar Institute in Cambridge, told BBC News: "The melting seen in the satellite data is unprecedented, as it extends all the way across the ice sheet including the summit, which is located 3,200 m above sea level. Melting is usually limited to less than 2000m elevation."

The news comes just days after Nasa satellite imagery revealed that a massive iceberg, twice the size of Manhattan, had broken off the Petermann Glacier in Greenland.

"The observation [from Greenland] is in my view much more important than the recently reported break up of a large iceberg from Petermann Glacier," Dr Christofferson added.

Nasa's Tom Wagner said: "This event, combined with other natural but uncommon phenomena, such as the large calving event last week on Petermann Glacier, are part of a complex story."

Scientists said they believed that much of Greenland's ice was already freezing again.

Advice For Novices ? Direct Marketing Tips And Tricks | InfoBizForum

It is pretty incredible how much of a difference direct marketing can have, of course you have to consider certain factors.

Anyone that is interested in a DM, for direct marketing, business model certainly is willing to give up the conveniences that the net provides. When it comes to old-fashioned marketing, DM is definitely not. This particular marketing method has actually made billions of dollars, so no worries on it working or not. Once you start reading about it, you?ll find yourself in another world. In fact, the foundation of all of the businesses on the Internet are actually based in DM marketing principles, as well as copywriting. You cannot do direct marketing in a leisurely manner ? taking it seriously is an absolute must.

Exceptional customer service spans all forms of business and marketing efforts. When considering direct marketing, this must also be taken into account. If you want to have your customers for many years to come, customer service is very important. It is absolutely important to have contact information written down, along with notes in regard to what you are dealing with. Although having a one 800-number is good, this is not what customer service is all about. So if people have questions, tell them in your sales copy how to contact you. Customer service is customer service ? do not try to hard sell your customers when all they are trying to do is get help. There is a simple principle in DM which looks at demographic profiles. This tells you what consumers are likely to buy, and which ones will buy the same things. Sometimes they will be found in the same geographic location as well. You can use this to your advantage if you have had success with a particular direct response campaign. Just take geographical areas, and analyze the data before you send. You then send out a test mailing to check the conversion metrics and see if they are favorable. You may be pleasantly surprised at what you discover, and then you can roll out a complete campaign.

We do hope that what you?ve been reading to this point with respect to direct marketing, likewise also the particular information?? to do? with online business, is of assistance for you. Now read on?? more to acquire further insights about this subject matter.

It?s more than worth taking the time to gain customer loyalty, despite the fact that it?s difficult, but it is quite achievable. Airlines and major credit card companies are living proof of this. You will find they have great loyalty programs. Consider studying and emulating their approach.

The idea is to use a loyalty program to cement the relationship with your clients. You need to ensure that both parties have something to gain. There?s no reason for you to overlook this in your direct response business. Put together your own loyalty program and feature it in your campaigns from the start. Direct marketing is a very good business model, but you have to be proactive and confident for it to be successful. It is totally different from internet marketing. And it?s also a tough one since the web has eroded the perceived usefulness of postal mail. On a more positive note, there is still a lot of profit left in DM which is why it?s still around.
