'I'm bored!' -- Research on attention sheds light on the unengaged mind

Thursday, September 27, 2012

You're waiting in the reception area of your doctor's office. The magazines are uninteresting. The pictures on the wall are dull. The second hand on the wall clock moves so excruciatingly slowly that you're sure it must be broken. You feel depleted and irritated about being stuck in this seemingly endless moment. You want to be engaged by something?anything?when a thought, so familiar from childhood, comes to mind: "I'm bored!"

Although boredom is often seen as a trivial and temporary discomfort that can be alleviated by a simple change in circumstances, it can also be a chronic and pervasive stressor that can have significant consequences for health and well-being.

Boredom at work may cause serious accidents when safety depends on continuous vigilance, as in medical monitoring or long-haul truck driving. On a behavioral level, boredom has been linked with problems with impulse control, leading to overeating and binge eating, drug and alcohol abuse, and problem gambling. Boredom has even been associated with mortality, lending grim weight to the popular phrase "bored to death."

Although it's clear that boredom can be a serious problem, the scientific study of boredom remains an obscure niche of research, and boredom itself is still poorly understood. Even though it's a common experience, boredom hasn't been clearly defined within the scientific community.

Psychological scientist John Eastwood of York University (Ontario, Canada) and colleagues at the University of Guelph and the University of Waterloo wanted to understand the mental processes that underlie our feelings of boredom in order to create a precise definition of boredom that can be applied across a variety of theoretical frameworks. Their new article, which brings together existing research on attention and boredom, is published in the September 2012 issue of Perspectives on Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

Drawing from research across many areas of psychological science and neuroscience, Eastwood and colleagues define boredom as "an aversive state of wanting, but being unable, to engage in satisfying activity," which arises from failures in one of the brain's attention networks.

Specifically, we're bored when:

 • We have difficulty paying attention to the internal information (e.g., thoughts or feelings) or external information (e.g., environmental stimuli) required for participating in satisfying activity
 • We're aware of the fact that we're having difficulty paying attention
 • We believe that the environment is responsible for our aversive state (e.g., "this task is boring," "there is nothing to do").

The researchers are confident that integrating the disparate fields of cognitive neuroscience, social psychology, and clinical psychology will produce a more thorough understanding of boredom and attention?phenomena which are ubiquitous and intimately linked.

Armed with a precise and broadly applicable definition of boredom that gets at the underlying mental processes, the authors identify important next steps in research on boredom. Eastwood and his colleagues hope to help in the discovery and development of new strategies that ease the problems of boredom sufferers and address the potential dangers of cognitive errors that are often associated with boredom.

Must-Do Advertising For Solo Estheticians and Massage Therapists ...

Whether you are an esthetician, stylist or massage therapist ? going it all on your own has its challenges and benefits. Without a retail location, you might believe you are at a marketing drawback to salons or day spas. Little do you know, nearly all of those morning spas and retails spending a fairly penny for retail space are thinking YOU?RE a smart cookie? because you have no personnel and very little overhead. Just like anything else in existence, the grass is obviously greener on one other side. For making your solo exercise, here are must-do marketing measures to take to bring new clients.1. Get a marketing strategy. If you?re a huge Friends lover like me, the first season episode might be remembered by you when Phoebe laments ?Get a plan?! I actually do not really have a pluh.? And while it might appear overwhelming to produce one, it?s may actually make your life easier after you have one. The sweetness of a marketing strategy is that you know what you?re going to spend, do (and MAYBE not do) for marketing month by month. Should you choose not know the place to start, drop me a note or call me. With several calls and emails, I?ll reach know your budget, goals, background and help you create a plan that will put you in control.2. Create a client contact program. This is paper-based or using a client database on your computer. The target listed here is to remind you to reach out to customers you have seen before. Some events to get this done are:*Two days post treatment to see should they have any questions. Inquire about how they think about their skin (any flare-ups?), their neck/back/etc. that they described just before their rub or if they have any design concerns about their new cut.*Birthdays. You could be the only individual to send them a card!*If you have noticed them in six weeks ? or whatever could be your recommended period for the following service.*Three weeks after purchasing an item ? do they require more?*Client anniversary thank you ? annually they?ve been a client, send them a little thank you note. Hand prepared cards are so very unique these times, but email greeting cards are just as efficient as getting the point across that you recognize their loyalty. You can easily see that following client actions and creating a process to remind you of these points is essential.3. Incentive for referrals. Review my Cost-free Referrals guidelines and produce a process that works for you. Building your business by word of mouth may be the most affordable advertising around?don?t hesitate to be nice to clients you refer you. A $25 Star-bucks card for one consumer may save you from a $800 newspaper ad that brings in the same number of new consumers (you got?just one.) Number need for a fancy details system?your organization cards (yes you need ?em) is going to do the trick. Give your clients extras if they book an appointment and record on your cards: ?I develop my company through referrals and would be pleased to simply help your friends or relatives.?4. Power the Internet. Having an internet site is, in my humble opinion, absolutely crucial for any organization. Use lower cost located solutions like Inspirational Web Hosting or SpaBoom ? organizations that recognize yours and offer low cost and an easy task to use solutions. On your site, make sure you collect e-mails and allow instant surprise certification purchase. Online sales is really a nice advantage, however, not for all when you have to then ship out items quickly after getting the online order. If you are in cure room all day long, this might be cause a delay?just be careful to precisely set client expectations. While there are many more marketing activities I had suggest just like a professional brand, or producing a brochure, there are also things you shouldn?t waste money on. Avoid adverts and direct mail. The price will most certainly outweigh the power you had acquire as a single practitioner.Be sure to monitor your marketing pennies well. It?s important to be aware about how much (and where) you?re investing your marketing dollars so you can determine whether to continue or not.

Sweet times for cows as gummy worms replace costly corn feed

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) - Mike Yoder's herd of dairy cattle are living the sweet life. With corn feed scarcer and costlier than ever, Yoder increasingly is looking for cheaper alternatives -- and this summer he found a good deal on ice cream sprinkles.

"It's a pretty colorful load," said Yoder, who operates about 450 dairy cows on his farm in northern Indiana. "Anything that keeps the feed costs down."

As the worst drought in half a century has ravaged this year's U.S. corn crop and driven corn prices sky high, the market for alternative feed rations for beef and dairy cows has also skyrocketed. Brokers are gathering up discarded food products and putting them out for the highest bid to feed lot operators and dairy producers, who are scrambling to keep their animals fed.

In the mix are cookies, gummy worms, marshmallows, fruit loops, orange peels, even dried cranberries. Cattlemen are feeding virtually anything they can get their hands on that will replace the starchy sugar content traditionally delivered to the animals through corn.

"Everybody is looking for alternatives," said Ki Fanning, a nutritionist with Great Plains Livestock Consulting in Eagle, Nebraska. "It's kind of funny the first time you see it but it works well. The big advantage to that is you can turn something you normally throw away into something that can be consumed. The amazing thing about a ruminant, a cow, you can take those type of ingredients and turn them into food."

PRICING VARIES

Feed is generally the largest single production expense for cattle operators. Whatever is fed needs to supply energy and protein levels that meet the animals' nutritional needs. High prices for soy has operators seeking alternatives for both corn and soy.

Corn alternatives are in particular demand as supplies are so tight that in some areas of the country, feed corn is not available at any price.

Pricing and availability of the many different "co-products" as they are called, varies from place to place, but buyers report savings of 10 percent to 50 percent.

The savings for operators are shrinking, however, as savvy resellers tie pricing for their alternative offerings to the price of corn, which surged to record highs this summer due to drought damage.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said last month the harvest now underway will yield the smallest corn crop in six years due to the drought that is still gripping more than half of the nation.

"They are using less corn in a number of these rations, but as corn prices go up, prices for really every other co-product go up too," said Greg Lardy, head of the animal sciences department at North Dakota State University.

Operators must be careful to follow detailed nutritional analyses for their animals to make sure they are getting a healthy mix of nutrients, animal nutritionists caution. But ruminant animals such as cattle can safely ingest a wide variety of feedstuffs that chickens and hogs can't.

The candy and cookies are only a small part of a broad mix of alternative feed offerings for cattle. Many operators use distillers grains, a byproduct that comes from the manufacture of ethanol. Other common non-corn alternatives include cottonseed hulls, rice products, potato products, peanut pellet.

Wheat "middlings," a byproduct of milling wheat for flour that contain particles of flour, bran, and wheat germ, also are fed.

And every now and then, there is a little chocolate for the hungry cows.

Hansen Mueller Grain out of Omaha, Nebraska, who markets chocolate bars alongside oats and peanut pellets, said it all comes down to fat, sugar and energy.

"That's all it is," said Bran Dill, a spokesman at Hansen Mueller. Demand is high, he said.

But he also said increasing prices are making alternatives less attractive.

"The price of this stuff has gone up so much it's gotten ridiculous," he said.

Screening regarding Noise-Induced Hearing Loss at Work

You may remember your basic school registered nurse giving you reading tests in addition to checking up your eyes and examining your head with regard to lice. One more common association with audiometric tests are with older adults who evidently have reading impairment. You may only think of young students along with elderly grownups when you think of audiometric screening, but industrial hearing tests are essential to stop noise induced hearing loss coming from hazardous sounds levels at work.

Hearing Incapacity and the Labor force

Occupational the loss of hearing is a destructive, but usually preventable, work site disability. More than 22 zillion Americans are at risk with regard to hearing loss due to chronic contact with damaging sounds while on the work. Any sounds that is over 85 decibels, or regarding the noise level of a power mower, can lead to everlasting hearing loss coming from repeated coverage.

Purposes of Audiometric Screening

Village, construction along with factory staff, who may go with power tools and equipment with powerful engines, are at the highest chance for the loss of hearing due to long-term noise coverage. National laws for field-work safety and health demand any work site with a most likely damaging quantity of noise to screen staff for the loss of hearing. These are many of the reasons for doing audiometric screening in perform sites.

? Detect and check individuals: Audiometric testing may detect more compact changes in reading than most people notice by themselves. It is useful with regard to diagnosing the loss of hearing and overseeing whether actions to prevent additional loss work well.

? Research: Countrywide agencies, including NIOSH and OSHA, may use audiometric screening to find out whether new protective equipment or the implementation of educational programs is worthwhile.

Fundamental Screening Procedure

Mobile audiometric testing could possibly be the most cost-effective way for larger companies to execute their necessary hearing exams. Licensed pros bring their equipment on-site and check for reading impairment inside employees. Workers with the loss of hearing are called for follow-up services or treatment options.

Regulations with regard to Audiometric Testing at Work

Work sites with higher noise coverage must follow laws for reading tests. Examples include:

? Regular rate of recurrence: Testing must occur each year, as well as any time employees are chosen.

? Retesting with alterations in procedures or equipment. Brand-new processes might be louder or cause a lot more exposure to ensure more staff need ear plugs.

? Record keeping: Companies must maintain careful records of their reading tests to ensure inspectors is able to see them if you have a problem.

Audiachinery along with strong motors, are at the highest risk with regard to hearing loss because of chronic sounds exposure. Countrywide regulations with regard to occupational safety and health require any work site with a potentially damaging amount of sounds to display screen employees with regard to hearing loss. They?re some of the factors behind conducting audiometric screening inside work sites.

? Diagnose along with monitor folks: Audiometric screening can find smaller alterations in hearing as compared to most people recognize on their own. It is useful for figuring out hearing loss along with monitoring whether or not measures to stop further reduction are effective.

? Analysis: National agencies, such as NIOSH along with OSHA, may also use audiometric screening to determine whether or not new protective gear or the execution of academic programs is worthwhile.

Basic Screening process Procedure

Mobile audiometric screening can be the the majority of cost-effective way for more substantial companies to conduct their required reading tests. Qualified professionals provide their gear on-site and check with regard to hearing incapacity in staff. Employees along with hearing loss are usually referred with regard to follow-up consultations or treatments.

Rules for Audiometric Testing in the office

Work sites with high sounds exposure are required to follow regulations with regard to hearing exams. Examples include:

? Standard frequency: Testing must arise each year, in addition to when staff is hired.

? Retesting along with changes in methods or gear. New processes may be even louder or cause more coverage so that a lot more employees need to have earplugs.

? Record keeping: Companies must keep mindful records of these hearing exams so that inspectors can see all of them if there is a challenge.

Audiometric screening is required for legal reasons if you are inside potentially harmful working situations.

Take advantage of reading tests through your employer should your job sets you vulnerable to hearing incapacity. As soon as you are usually diagnosed, a hearing expert can help you obtain treatment preventing further reduction.

Tax on Amazon purchases in Calif. begins Saturday

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) ? Online retailer Amazon.com has tried to become all things to all consumers, but in California, it is about to take on a role it has fought against for years: tax collector.

The change, which takes effect this weekend, comes after years of bitter back and forth between the world's largest online mall and the California Legislature over whether Internet retailers should have to charge sales tax. The two sides reached a deal in 2011 that included a one-year grace period set to end Saturday.

The deadline has spurred at least some consumers into impulse-buying mode, making big-ticket purchases and stocking up on essentials before the tax collection kicks in.

"Even the mailroom is laughing at me," said Derek Daniels, 37, who has had Amazon packages delivered to his Los Angeles office every day this week. He's loading up on household supplies like trash bags and collecting birthday and Christmas presents for his Superman-loving 2 year-old.

"We are hoping he won't fall in love with Batman by the time November rolls around," Daniels said.

The looming deadline prompted San Diego artist John Purlia to finally buy that Samsung flat-screen television that had been sitting in his Amazon shopping cart for months. He also picked up four CDs, an external hard drive and an oddly decorated $17.99 kitchen cutting-board ? a gag gift for his sister.

"The TV was the motivating factor and the other stuff came along for the ride," said Purlia, 52. "I know I'm going to be back at Amazon before Saturday looking to take advantage of this. It's like the final days of a sale."

Technically, Purlia and Daniels owe taxes on all of this: California residents are supposed to calculate their obligation and send it directly to the state. But fewer than 1 percent do, according to the Franchise Tax Board.

Lawmakers have long complained that the increasingly popular e-retailer was depriving the state of millions of dollars by refusing to charge taxes at checkout. But Amazon said it was shielded by a 1992 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that prohibits states from forcing businesses without a physical presence in the area to collect sales tax.

The e-commerce giant said it did not have a physical presence in California because it does not have warehouses or other buildings here.

Similar fights have played out in other states, with Amazon sometimes threatening to shutter distribution centers to be able to continue selling tax-free goods.

Now Amazon is making parallel treaties across the country, paving the way to start opening warehouses and offering faster shipping in areas where tax disputes had previously prevented the company from putting down roots. The company now collects sales taxes on orders shipped to seven states, including New York and Texas, and has agreed to start imposing levies in six more.

The resolution of Amazon's tax fight in California has allowed the company to start building a network of distribution centers. Soon, customers in the nation's most populous state will receive Amazon shipments from warehouses in San Bernardino, which is near Los Angeles, and Patterson, near the San Francisco Bay Area ? instead of from Reno, Nev. or Phoenix. Each new center is expected to bring hundreds of jobs to California, where the unemployment rate is the third highest in the nation.

The new warehouses are expected to shrink delivery times and may one day enable Amazon to offer some customers here same-day shipping, as it does in 10 U.S. cities, including Boston and Seattle.

This is the Holy Grail for hardcore online shoppers like San Francisco product manager Reid Butler.

"For me, most my friends and family, same-day delivery could be a big blow to our retailers down the street," said Butler, 32.

As the tax deadline nears, Butler is stocking up on enough soap, printer ink and baby formula to last until the day he can scan a barcode in the morning and receive his toilet paper that afternoon.

The brick-and-mortar stores that pushed for the "Amazon tax" to level the business playing field hope the changes will end the dispiriting practice of "showrooming," when people browse electronics or books in a store but make their purchases online.

"It will remove one incentive for not buying local," California Retailers Association president Bill Dombrowski said. "Retailers are looking forward to it, but we don't go out and buy champagne on September 15."

Colin Sebastian, an analyst with Baird Equity Research, predicts Amazon will be able to make up for the loss in sales tax advantage by carpeting the state with distribution centers.

"The irony in this is the closer Amazon gets to its customers, the more success it seems to have," he said.

Amazon spokesman Scott Stanzel said the company will continue to offer lower prices, even without the sales tax advantage, and is not worried about losing business. He would not say whether the tax deadline has affected sales.

More change may be on the way. Amazon is lobbying Congress to cut through the web of state-specific rules and devise a national policy for Internet taxation.

Sales tax rates in California reach 9.75 percent and are among the highest in the country. The new rules, which may affect more than 200 out-of-state businesses, are expected to bring in more than $200 million annually, with at least $80 million coming from Amazon alone.

California's tax authority is preparing to hire 30 specialists to make sure the state collects the revenue it is due. Jerome Horton, chairman of the state Board of Equalization, said the change will allow out of state companies to "contribute their fair share" toward schools and other public services.

Amazon has been tax-free for nearly two decades; an adult lifetime for some customers.

Amateur photographer Joe Chin, 27, saved more than a hundred dollars last week when he used Amazon to buy a $1,400 Fujifilm digital camera. A world without tax-free shopping will be an adjustment, he said.

"It's kind of like going back to how it was when I was a kid," he said.

Barney Frank Blasts 'Inaccurate' GOP Claims About Federal Reserve

Republican critics have taken issue with the Federal Reserve's stimulus measures in the past. Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) believes it's time for voters to stop taking them seriously.

"[Republicans'] bitches and moans about the consequences of quantitative easing have been as inaccurate as the similar predictions they've made about same-sex marriage," Frank told The Huffington Post in a phone interview on Thursday. "None of the negative consequences they've said would happen have."

Frank, who became the first sitting member of Congress to marry someone of the same gender in July, said that the Federal Reserve's new quantitative easing measures will boost the economy through the "wealth effect," in which higher stock prices spur consumers and companies to spend more by making them feel wealthier.

"Congress was doing some good stuff in 2009 and 2010, and then the right wing took over the House and paralyzed it," Frank said. "The right wing cut off our efforts to help the economy."

Frank's comments come after the Federal Reserve announced Thursday that it would embark on a third round of quantitative easing, or asset purchases aimed at stimulating the economy. This time, the Fed said it would buy $40 billion in mortgage-backed securities per month on an open-ended basis. It also said it would keep interest rates near zero through the middle of 2015.

The Romney campaign attacked the Fed's announcement on Thursday, saying in a statement: "The American economy doesn't need more artificial and ineffective measures. We should be creating wealth, not printing dollars." Republican Congressmen also blasted the move, accusing the Fed of overreaching.

Contrary to Republican predictions of high inflation and the Federal Reserve losing money as a result of its stimulus measures, inflation has been low, and the Federal Reserve has been making a substantial profit largely thanks to its asset purchases, Frank noted. The Federal Reserve, Frank added, has been "absolutely" more responsible than Congress in addressing high unemployment "for one simple reason: there are no Tea Party members of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors."

Frank plans to retire from Congress at the end of his current term.

The Transformative Research Award supports exceptionally innovative or unconventional research projects with the potential to change fundamental paradigms

Karl Deisseroth, MD, PhD, professor of bioengineering and of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University, has won a Transformative Research Award of $22.48 million over five years from the National Institutes of Health through a program designed to encourage high-risk, high-reward approaches to science.

Deisseroth studies the brain as a complex biological system, exploring the extreme challenges of gathering high-resolution local information in specific parts of the brain, while maintaining a global perspective across the entire brain system.

The award will allow his interdisciplinary team to continue working on an approach, known as CLARITY, that may someday elucidate brain circuitry abnormalities involved in complex psychiatric diseases such as depression, PTSD, drug abuse, autism and schizophrenia.

"Specifically, we've united the tools of chemical engineering, molecular genetics and optics to gather detailed and specific information from within an intact brain," said Deisseroth, "However, these tools are not limited to the brain alone. They can be applied to study any intact biological system."

This year's total award funding comes from the NIH Common Fund and multiple NIH institutes and centers, and totals approximately $155 million. NIH director Francis Collins, MD, PhD, noted that the funding "provides opportunities for innovative investigators in any area of health research to take risks when the potential impact in biomedical and behavioral science is high."

###

Research on CLARITY was launched through Stanford's CNC Program, an interdisciplinary effort that includes key Stanford investigators Liqun Luo, Krishna Shenoy, Marc Levoy and Philippe Mourrain.

Kindle Fire HD review: Improved, but not evolved

1 hr.

When you handle the new 7-inch Kindle Fire HD, you feel as if Amazon's engineers went through a checklist and nuked all of the complaints of the original Fire in an orderly fashion. Battery life not great? It's 11 hours now. Power button too easy to bump by accident? Fixed. No physical volume button? Now there is. Screen not so easy on the eyes? Noticeably improved.

But if many of the hardware complaints are resolved, why does it feel so much like last year's Kindle Fire? Why doesn't it feel like a step up? Because the experience itself has not evolved, and it's hard to look past its chief role as a portal for Amazon to sell you books, movies, apps and games.?

In other words, once you've spent $199, it's time to start spending money.

Physically, the HD is a hair thinner than its predecessor?but strangely larger ? wider all around, making it prettier, but?harder to grip with one hand. There are no physical buttons on the face, but now there are, flush with one edge, a power button and a volume toggle. These buttons are so subtle, they are sometimes hard to locate, but at least it's better than the first Kindle Fire, which turned on and off by accident all the time on account of its pronounced power button, located on the bottom center of the device.

I get why Amazon stashed the buttons: The company's vision has always been to remove any barrier between you and the book or movie or app. That means that, ideally, all you see is a screen.?And that?screen is definitely where Amazon put its money this time around.

The reading experience on the new Kindle Fire HD is far better than on the original. The pixels are tighter, making for a near-"Retina" display, where you can't see the dots. If you, like me, read on a tablet at night (ideally with white text on a black background), you will appreciate the HD's ability to turn the dimmer way down low, so that your eyes feel less strain in the dark. And the screen's contrast is higher while glare is reduced. You're not going to love it in the bright light of a summer day, but in most situations, words are easier to enjoy.

Pictures, too. The original Fire didn't have a photo viewer at all, and the one created for the Fire HD is a delight to use. A single finger tap brings up a photo, you can double-tap or pinch to zoom, then a quick two-fingered tap sends it back. It's good user interface, and it serves to highlight the fact that photos look good on the HD screen.

They look good once they've loaded, that is.?Unless you download photos to your device, the app browses your cloud-stored shots, pulling from Amazon's Cloud Drive and Facebook. You can't even shoot photos with the built-in camera?? that's just for video chatting on Skype, at least until third-party apps,?such as a forthcoming Facebook snapshot program, will make use of it.

You'd think with "HD" in its name, the new Fire would be a huge step-up for movie enjoyment, but the original Fire already?did okay in that department. The jump up in screen resolution is more noticeable with stills and text than moving video, especially on that small a screen.

That isn't to say watching movies isn't more fun on the Fire HD ? a new feature called X-Ray (powered by my favorite trivia source, the Amazon-owned IMDB), lets you pull up movie information and photos as you're watching.?

Amazon has also partnered with Dolby to up the quality of the stereo speakers and make them louder. The first ? also a stereo pair ? weren't that bad, though,?and there's still a tinny experience compared to a decent set of earphones. (And wouldn't you likely want to use earphones as often as possible anyway?)

Email is another app that Amazon's software developers have clearly been putting effort into, beyond the photo app and the X-Ray movie trivia. The old email program?was dark and stiff, the new one is brighter, more agile to the touch and intuitive. Also, it supports more complicated email accounts, such as those that sync to corporate Exchange servers.

Looking at all of the Fire HD's software, though, I don't get a sense of the design language, like I do on Microsoft's Windows 8 and Windows Phone products. Nor can I tell exactly how ambitious Amazon is about breeding first-party software, like Apple does. Yes, there's email and calendar, but when I went to jot down some notes, I couldn't find a way to do it. Even the included (but third-party) OfficeSuite app proved no use, despite its name.

Maybe a 7-inch tablet isn't really for doing stuff, it's just for consuming media. An honest notion.?But what happens when the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD comes out? More physically resembling an iPad, it will have a harder time justifying its lack of activity.

You can't take a picture, you can't write notes. You can email pictures but you can't edit them with the native photo app. Maybe Amazon's goal is to send you out to the Appstore to fill in these gaps for yourself (and pay for the right to do so). But that's not how it tends to work: Google and Apple foster app innovation in part by building their own apps, and continuing to raise the bar.?

Like with?the previous Kindle Fire, another big issue is that most of the media applications require connectivity. Yes, books live in local storage while you're reading them, and you can download music or photos for use later, but much of that is premeditated. Purchase a video, and you have the right to download it, but if you are merely Amazon's loyalest customer, and a $70-per-year?paying member of the?Amazon?Prime service, you have to establish a Wi-Fi connection to enjoy the bounty of amazing TV shows ("Downton Abbey"! "The West Wing"!?"The French Chef with Julia Child"!) and movies ("Thor"! "True Grit"!?"Hot Rod"!).

So let's get back to the original premise, that while the Kindle Fire has certainly received a tune-up, it's geared more than ever to serve as a means to part you from your money. Wake up the device, and the first thing you see is an ad, for a movie or some Amazon special offer. Slide the wrong slider, and you accidentally "learn more" about said product, instead of getting to your own?stuff. Once you're on the home screen, you'll notice a one-line text ad at the bottom of the screen.?

Even Amazon recognizes that this could come off as a bit crass to some customers, and is offering a $15 reprieve. (You'll find the option under "Manage Your Kindle," once you've registered a Fire HD.)

But there's another new promotional vehicle that will not go away, even after you've paid the $15 bounty. In the home screen, when you turn the device from horizontal view to vertical view, you instantly see what "Customers Also Bought." It's a list of Amazon-sold media that changes depending on what you are looking at in the main carousel. This "feature" replaced the Favorites bookshelf, which had been filled with your content. Favorites is now easily accessible from any screen, by tapping a star icon at the bottom right corner, but it's clear Amazon didn't mind sneaking a little bonus advertising onto the home screen as part of the redesign.

Look, fundamentally, this is also the premise of the iPad. From iTunes to the App Store, from iBooks to the Newsstand, Apple wants to sell and sell, and claim a healthy cut from those who want to reach you as a customer. It's just that the out-of-box experience for the iPad is less up front about it. There's more to explore, more to play with. People who don't have iTunes accounts ? including my mom and my sister, in fact ? still manage to enjoy their iPhones and iPads to a great extent.

The Kindle Fire HD just goes a little too far. This is perilous, especially at a time when consumer options are so plentiful.

If you, like me, enjoy Amazon's e-books, then you probably already know that you can download apps to get at them on iPhones, iPads, Android devices and even Windows Phones. That's why I prefer Amazon over Apple when it comes to books: Amazon's are just available in more places.?

Amazon is bringing video to more platforms too ? most notably with the recent introduction of an iPad app for streaming video, which gives you access to stuff you bought and also Prime subscription?video that you can stream at no extra cost.

So why choose a Kindle Fire HD over an iPad? Price. It's $199.?

But what if ? and I'm just spitballing here ? what if Apple puts out an 8-inch iPad for $249? Then you'd get basically the same content ? and a whole lot more ? on a slightly larger screen, for $50 more. (And you'd be able to try it out in an Apple store before you bought it.)?

If the rumors are true and Apple really does come out with a mini iPad in October, that $199 price point that we went absolutely bonkers over a year ago will look, well, a tad high.

You could buy an original but slightly tweaked Kindle Fire for $159, but what I think you really should do is buy a Kindle Paperwhite e-reader for $119. That thing is a fine example of innovation in the face of commoditization ? a product that stands out from the herd of lookalikes without costing any?more. My Paperwhite review will hit closer to its Oct. 1 launch, but I can tell you right now, from what I've seen already, it's?fine to pre-order it.

But if you have any money left over, do yourself a favor and keep saving up for an iPad. The 7-inch?Kindle Fire HD is nice, but it's just one of the paths to a rich Amazon customer experience, and it's?not the best one.

Einstein's advice about email marketing metrics :Local Business ...

The whitepaper covers common email metrics, how to pick the right metrics and risks in using metrics.

Knowing the risks in using metrics is important, as metrics are only a tool and no tool is perfect. Knowing what a metrics doesn?t tell you is valuable too.

Consider this scenario: a lower campaign open rate that delivers higher revenue. As Einstein said??not everything that can be counted, counts?,?in this case just how valuable is counting opens?

That?s not just theoretical either; lower email campaign opens can deliver increased revenue.

 • When considering what metrics are important the questions to answer are:
 • What is the objective that needs to be measured?
 • What metrics best represent this objective?
 • Who is going to use this metric?
 • How is it going to be used?
 • Who will make the measurement?
 • How is the measurement going to be made?

The key metrics are those that are?important to the business, typically those that measure business impact in terms of revenue and customers. In some cases immediate revenue may not be the objective or measureable, in which case a proxy such as clicks or other conversion goal such as online form completed might be used.

If the metric is for the CFO or in support of a business case then revenue based metrics speak the loudest. If the CFO has two investment choices, one with the case of 5% more revenue and one with 25% higher open rate its clear where the money will go.

Metrics that don?t measure direct business success have their place and use. It?s about the right metric for the right job. For the person looking after deliverability they will want bounce and spam complaints rates, whilst these metrics are of little interest to anyone else.

The standard email campaign metrics found in many broadcast solutions are unlikely to provide metrics tightly aligned to marketing objectives. For instance what if the marketing objective is to increase the number of one time customers who make a repeat purchase? Or the number of customers who renew a service contract??Create specific metrics?that measure the marketing objective.

To consider Einstein?s point that not everything that counts can be counted, I?d like to round off with some thoughts about what we can?t easily measure in email:

 • How much affect an un-opened email has on subsequent emails. When someone sees the brand name and subject line, how much of an impression is left? We know that unopened emails have value too but have trouble measuring this.
 • The influence of email on offline activity. That email can and does nudge activity offline is known.
 • The attribution of email when it didn?t result in an immediate click. A DMA survey showed that customers are interested in the contents of an email will often not directly click on it but follow up on a website indirectly.
 • The number of emails that reach the inbox and that were seen.

How Financial Advisers Work |

?

Independent financial planners work in the investment industry but, unlike equity, commodity or bond traders, financial planners do not work on a commission basis. This may seem a trite distinction but financial planning is designed so that planners do not make trades to earn commissions. For example, every time an equity trader moves money from one company to another, he or she earns a commission, regardless of the success or failure of the acquisition.

As seen daily, the integrity of equity traders has come under scrutiny.? So many stockbrokers have abused their fiduciary responsibility that the public regard for the industry is sour.

Financial Planning Applications

The goal of financial planning is very different than the goal of traders. Financial planners are motivated by their commitment to provide their clients effective management of resources strategies that will meet the client?s lifelong financial goals.?

The financial planner?s responsibilities include:

 • Investment planning
 • Retirement planning
 • Tax planning
 • Estate planning
 • Risk management

Financial planners must be well versed in a number of financial and tax structures. The list of services above calls for knowledge in all sectors of the financial services industry. This well-rounded knowledge of the industry allows financial planners to bring multiple tools to the planning table.

Clients Reign

Because every person?s goals are different, it is imperative that the financial planner knows the clients past and current asset management strategy. You would be surprised how many people do not have a plan for the rest of their life. Financial planners must be good listeners and will usually ask many questions about the client?s goals and investment history as well as current investment activity. The planner?s ability to grasp the client?s objectives is what will enable the financial planner to shape a definitive program that provides no surprises and is there when the client needs it.

Financial planning does not mean that the client cannot invest in markets or take on risk with other forms of investments.? Generally, short-term goals are not part of a financial planning strategy. Financial planning is a critical failsafe for retirement or in the event of an unexpected fatality.

Financial planners usually meet with their clients at least once a year. From the client?s perspective, the financial planner should be one of the first advisers called as life circumstances change. Unlike other forms of investment, planners have flexibility and because the client?s funds are in various financial products, the planner is able to respond quickly to help solve any unforeseen events. They are in their element when the clients can enjoy retirement knowing that the estate has been carefully prepared.

Stocks pull back ahead of big Fed meeting

Insight on the markets, with Debra Borchard, The Street; Keith Wirtz, Fifth Third Asset Management; and CNBC's Rick Santelli & Steve Liesman.

By NBC News wire services

Updated at 4:05 p.m. ET: Stocks closed Monday lower, led by weakness in technology shares, as investors locked in gains on a recent rally ahead of possible policy action from the Federal Reserve this week.

The benchmark S&P 500 index rose 2.2 percent last week to hit highs not seen in nearly five years, and traders were eyeing the 1,440 level on the S&P as the next barrier to further gains. The Nasdaq hit a 12-year high last week.

Shares of Intel fell Monday after several brokerages cut price targets on the chipmaker. Shares of Apple, the world's largest publicly traded company by market value, dropped.

Investors were reluctant to push Wall Street higher before key event risks this week, including a ruling by Germany's constitutional court on Wednesday on the legality of the euro zone's permanent financial rescue fund and a policy decision from the Fed on Thursday.

"The markets are in a wait-and-see mode in the early part of this week," said Jim Awad, managing director at Zephyr Management in New York. "You have to say that the markets are up a lot, so the short-term risks are on the downside."

The Fed looks set to launch a third round of bond purchases this week and economists said Friday's weak report on jobs growth for August was likely to convince the U.S. central bank a looser monetary policy was needed.

Expectations for more stimulus measures from central banks in the United States and Europe have underpinned the markets in recent weeks, but some analysts say a lot of the good news may have already been priced into the market.

Investors sold some big-cap tech names that have done well all year. Worse-than-expected data on imports from China added to selling in the sector.

"Today there is a little pull back, a little profit-taking in technology after last week," said Gary Wedbush, head of trading at regional investment bank Wedbush Morgan in Los Angeles. "I would use it as a buying opportunity."

Chinese import data showed a fall of 2.6 percent on the year in August, short of expectations for a 3.5 percent rise. Exports grew 2.7 percent, below forecasts for a 3 percent rise in a Reuters poll.

American International Group slipped after the U.S. Treasury Department said it will sell most of its stake in the insurer, making the government a minority investor for the first time since it rescued the company in the depths of the financial crisis four years ago.

Reuters contributed to this report.

What Are The Benefits of Workout Routines

There are two basic answers to the question Why are Workout Routines Important. The first relates to a physical reason and the second relates to a mental reason.

I think it is very well known that undertaking any sort of physical exercise in a workout routine is beneficial for your fitness or for ?keeping in shape? i.e. keeping the flab at bay and maintaining our flexibility.

But how many people out there realise the importance of physical exercise to out mental health or fitness. I suppose it follows that if your body is in good shape then this will help your mind to be in good shape ? but hang on, this is not necessarily true. There are stories of successful athletes and sports people who are physically fit suffering from depression ? so how can this be.

Well, the actual ?doing? of the fitness workout routines is the important part. Have I confused some people by saying this. What I mean is the behavioural process we go through before, during and after our exercise routine is very beneficial. Initially we may not be keen on exercising, but we go ahead and do it, and afterwards we feel good about the achievement ? simple.

To make things clearer, and to show you some good reasons for undertaking workout routines I have two lists. The first gives 10 points highlighting the benefits of getting fit, the second gives 7 points why workout routines have an advantage for our mental fitness.

The Ten Benefits of Being Fit

 1. Workout routines increase our breathing rate which increases the capacity of our lungs and gives us more ?puff?.
 2. By increasing our activity, we increase our basal metabolic rate also which helps us maintain or lose weight.
 3. Physical exercise improves our flexibility, ease of movement and balance.
 4. The heart muscle is increased during your workout routine which increases your heart?s pumping capacity, and lowers your resting heart (pulse) rate.
 5. Because your body is being worked, its systems are being tested, so blood circulation efficiency will increase and blood pressure tend to reduce.
 6. The more active you are the more blood corpuscles you have, so the more oxygen your blood can carry, so you won?t tire so easily.
 7. Workout routines for some people will have the vital effect of reducing their chance of getting type II Diabetes.
 8. Physical exercise and a good level of fitness is great for your self esteem. You feel good about what you are achieving so your mental state is? improved.
 9. Linked with point 8; because your body is able to work at an increased level of efficiency, you mental state is stable and you can deal with stress more easily
 10. Increases your health (physical and mental), improves your quality of life and means less visits to the Doctor.

This all makes good sense really. So how can physical exercise improve our mental fitness?

The Seven Factors Explaining Why Physical Workout Routines Can Benefit Our Mental Fitness

 1. Physical workout routines are more and more part of the ?medication? for dealing with depression and anxiety.? By itself the exercise is not 100% of the treatment, but it does play an important part.
 2. Work investigating the link between physical exercise and psychotherapy has resulted in findings that show they are both as about as effective in treating moderate depression.? It would appear that some patients who workout frequently develop greater self esteem and self respect ?and so are less likely to over eat or over use alcohol or resort to drugs.
 3. Physical workout routines have been shown to have a positive impact on anxiety. People who workout regularly say they feel calmer and more relaxed more often.? ??It is thought only 5-10 minutes of aerobic exercise like jogging, swimming etc., exercise which makes you puff, can produce this effect.
 4. Over all the activity for increasing fitness is positive, so it is a good antidote for feelings of hopelessness that depression produces.? Any physical workout routine whether static as in weight lifting or with motion is likely to have a positive benefit against depression.
 5. The negative emotions like anger, withdrawal, and stress are all reduced by regular exercise routines
 6. When undertaking fitness exercises the achievement of doing this will improve their self image by improving the way they see themselves and especially what they feel about their ability. In this way exercise is something they can take ownership of and be proud of what they achieve.
 7. The environment for exercising is always positive and so it is healthy for these patients to socialize in such an environment. As well, they are taking part in an activity alongside other people who are actively involved with the same interest and who will have the same aspirations.

So there we are. I was interested when reading these points because although I knew that exercise is good for you :-) ,? I didn?t realize how good workout routines actually produced the goods.

Before you go running for a lighter and some inflammable fluid, let?s make it clear that this title was just a way of calling your attention to a well-known hair removal system that uses laser light to burn the hair follicles and stop hair from growing back. Or at least, make it go from dark and fast growing into almost invisible and slow-growing hair. While you will be burning your leg hair off, laser is a considerably safer alternative to trying to get third-degree burns yourself, and much less painful.

Why Cloud Computing Is Unavoidable In The Automotive Industry

It is no longer a mere premise that the prospects of integration of cloud computing are embraced by nearly all major industries, including the automobile industry. Cloud computing is bound to change this industry and the driving experience as we know it today. There are three main areas of the automobile industry that could experience the greatest impact of cloud computing.

Partnerships and integration

Consumer demographics are changing, with more attention being directed at technological integration of scalable systems that are affordable and easily adaptable. This has required mergers and partnerships between technology and automotive companies in order to form a manageable synergy for competitive and quality delivery.

There is also a worldwide trend of tighter government regulations on safety and energy efficiency that is adversely affecting this?industryy. Balanced economies of scale require the automotive manufacturer to create partnerships with clean energy technologists to marry their functions. In such a setting, cloud computing becomes the all-essential minister, joining the two in a crucial partnership. Other areas include infotainment technology which, analysts predict, is expected to constitute 40 percent of total car value by 2025, up from the present 20 percent.

Manufacturer-dealer-customer chain

The automobile industry is currently ailing from dismal performance of sales globally, owed to the rise in steel and oil prices plus factors like environmental concerns. The challenges have compelled this industry to change tact and look for innovative ways to cut costs and deliver vehicles that will match consumer needs. This is where cloud computing is proving to be essential. A good example is the need for outsourcing external solutions that qualify their own infrastructural and personnel resources. These cloud-based outsourced services may include engineering or administrative solutions that are available through cloud computing platforms. Such services will help manufacturers stay afloat on a competitive level while accessing and holding full control privileges of the outsourced infrastructure.

For dealers, accessing faster services and applications through these cloud platforms will result in low maintenance and running costs. All these bring to the table the postulated need for cost elasticity and effectiveness in the manufacturing and supply chains. The cloud technology is therefore invaluable as the automotive industry seeks innovative ways to cut costs and deliver market-specific vehicles that will encourage consumers to start spending again on automobiles.

Auto infotainment

The present navigation and infotainment systems in cars will be significantly improved by cloud computing. These systems cover every area from vehicle tracking, GPS systems, to entertainment and Internet access on the go. The aspect of voice control is unavoidable in the car of the future, and the only deterrent at present is the fact that such systems need massive processors and software, a challenge that is aptly addressed by the use of cloud computing. All these will deliver remarkable experience for the driver and passengers. They will be able to effortlessly avoid traffic jams, browse the web, automatically pay for services like parking or toll fees etc.

There seem to be a unanimous agreement that cloud computing is unavoidably an integral part of the automobile industry.
